SCOTTISH DEAF TEAM LIFT KOLKATA CUP
Posted: 21/Nov/06

Scotland’s Deaf International Rugby team have lifted the Kolkata Cup – their prize after an exciting 27-all draw against their English counterparts at Braidholm, Glasgow at the weekend.

The Scots were awarded the trophy – donated by Rugby World magazine and named Kolkata, the Indian word for Calcutta, to reflect links to the wider game – after out-scoring the English by five tries to three in their inaugural meeting.

Scotland centre, Mike Tweedie (Edinburgh Accies), was named man of the match by two neutral observers from the Welsh Deaf Rugby Union.

Tweedie was among Scotland’s try scorers alongside Boroughmuir’s Grant Rutherford (2), Roddy Matheson (Whitecraigs) and Jamie Hislop (Newton Stewart).

Scotland had led 20 points to three at one point before England clawed back to 20-17 at the interval. In the second-half, Scotland’s fifth try, which was converted, reopened a gap but a penalty and converted try in the 80th minute meant that England drew level 27-all.

Scottish Deaf Rugby’s next international is against their Welsh counterparts, the reigning deaf world champions, in Edinburgh in February over the weekend of the Scotland v Wales RBS 6 Nations international.

Posted: 15/Nov/06

Scotland’s Deaf International rugby team are to face their English counterparts for the first time.

The inaugural match takes place at GHA’s ground at Braidholm in Glasgow this Saturday (18 November) with a 1pm kick-off.

It’s seven years since Scottish Deaf Rugby was established and Saturday’s match will be the fourth full international they have played. They have lost twice to the current deaf world champions, Wales, 0-60 and 17-32, while they defeated their Japanese counterparts 29-14.

Rugby World magazine is providing a trophy for the battle against the English – the Kolkata Cup – and the game is benefiting from a grant from the lottery based Awards for All, with additional support from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games bid.

Scotland have selected a 29-strong squad from the club game for Saturday’s contest.

The team’s secretary, Neil Houston, explained that players are always welcome. “Potential players should not feel embarrassed about admitting they may not have perfect hearing,” he said.

“Players who are deaf, hard of hearing or hearing impaired can be considered. To qualify for the international squad you have to have a 25 decibel average hearing loss between both ears, be Scottish born, born of a Scottish parent/grandparent or resident in Scotland for three years. You must also be a member of a rugby club.”
